• Oyo anti-open grazing law not effective two years after

• Enugu residents seek enactment of anti-open grazing law

• Katsina bans inter-state transport of cattle

• Niger suspends cattle markets over insecurity

• Afenifere raises concerns over alleged deployment of Northern youths

Less than 24 hours after Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu suspended all activities in Ondo State forest reserves, he, yesterday, signed into law the Anti-Grazing Bill passed by the State House of Assembly.

According to a statement made available to journalists in Akure yesterday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, “the move is in line with the resolution of the Southern Governors’ Forum at its last meeting in Lagos where September 1 was set as the deadline for governors in Southern Nigeria to sign the Anti-Open Grazing Bill into law.

“This is worthwhile and a very laudable development aimed at stemming needless instances of skirmishes, conflicts as well as infractions on the enviably peaceful disposition of the good people of Ondo State,” the statement said.

Explaining the import of the new law across the 18 local councils of the state, Akeredolu, who is also the Chairman of the Southwest Governors’ Forum, said: “For emphasis, no particular group of persons is the target. While it is the hope of government that all residents would take an ample advantage of this law to enhance our socio-economic well being in Ondo, compliance of same shall be given the utmost attention.

“Government shall pursue with vigour, through lawful means, to ensure strict compliance. In this regard, details of the new law shall be made available to the public for proper information, more depth of understanding on contents as well as other relevant areas,” the statement read.

This is coming two days after herders, through their socio-cultural group, Miyetti Allah Kauta Hore, said they will not recognise such policy, describing it as ‘satanic’. The herders said the anti-open grazing policy taking off today had been overtaken by events, even as they declared their support for the Federal Government’s plan to revive grazing reserves, grazing routes and facilitate ranching in all the states.

National secretary of Miyetti Allah, Saleh Alhassan, said members would not recognise any anti-open grazing policy in the country. “Nobody can do anti-grazing policy in Nigeria, where we are constitutionally guaranteed the right of movement and occupation,” he said.

While Oyo State claimed it has passed the anti-cattle grazing bill into law in 2019, the state is still having challenges with implementation of the law as herdsmen move freely in some parts of the state unrestricted.

For instance, as at last week, some herders with their cattle were still moving freely within some areas along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that falls within the Oyo territory.

Similar development was also noticed along the Oyo-Osun Expressway last week, where countless number of herders with their cattle were moving freely in the forests.

Due to this development, some commuters said the road is still a dangerous route at night owing to activities of armed herdsmen, an indication the law, which was indeed passed, does not have the force of implementation.

Several attempts to call the Speaker, Oyo State Assembly, for verification on modus operandi of the law failed, as he did not respond to calls or messages in the last two days.

In Lagos, the Chairman House Committee on Information, Lagos State Assembly, David Setonji, said the deadline given by the Southern Governors’ Forum was September and not necessarily September 1 as some are saying. This appears a safe explanation as to why the law will not take off in Lagos today.

The Guardian leant that the executive arm of Lagos passed the bill to the Assembly not long ago but the House is currently on recess.

According to Setonji, “I can assure the people of Lagos that the Assembly will accelerate passage of the bill before the end of September to meet the deadline. Lagos is not shying away from implementing the law as some people are insinuating.”

Setonji also dismissed the fear that the Federal Government might use federal might to suppress the bill’s implementation if eventually passed into law due to vested interest.

According to him, “there is a Constitution in the country and I believe that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is committed to security of life and property in the state.”

IN Enugu State, residents, yesterday, gave explicit support and approval to the State House of Assembly to enact the anti-open grazing law in the state.

At a public hearing on a “Law to prohibit open grazing, regulate cattle ranching and for connected purposes,” organised by the Joint Committees on Judiciary, Agriculture, Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges and Youths, Sports and Culture of the state Assembly, the people stated that enacting such law would not only restore peace, but security of farmers and residents.

But herdsmen in the state, who apparently could be affected when such law comes into force, requested for one month period to enable them come up with a position on the proposed law

Leading in the approval for the House to proceed with enactment of the law, the Chairman, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzo, said traditional rulers in the state had gone through the draft and were in total support of the law.

Chief Toby Eze, who spoke on behalf of Town Unions of Enugu, said the bill would curb the menace of killer herders and would cause the people of Enugu and entire Southeast to heave a sigh of relief.

Speaking in like manner, Israel Chinedu, who spoke on behalf of the youths, noted that though the bill was overdue, it still came timely. He assured of the youths’ support for the bill.

Herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) and the Hausa community in the state said Northerners in the state were for anything that would ensure safety and peaceful coexistence.

Leader of Northern Community in Enugu and Sariki Hausawa Enugu, Alhaji Yusuf Sambo, as well as Chairman of MACBAN, South East Zone, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, said the one month period would enable them articulate their position on the said law.

AS some of the Southern states begin full implementation of the anti-open grazing law, some Northern states have also taken firm decision on the issue. Yesterday, the Katsina State government banned the transportation of cattle from the state to any part of the country.

This was contained in a statement signed by Abdu Labaran, Director General, Media to the state government. The ban is part of efforts to improve security in the state and is backed by the Security Challenges (Containment) Order signed into law by Governor Aminu Bello Masari.

The order also bans trucks/lorries carrying firewood from the bush and the sale of animals at the markets of Jibia, Batsari, Safana, Danmusa, Kankara, Malumfashi, Charanchi, Mai’aduwa, Kafur, Faskari, Sabuwa, Baure, Dutsinma and Kaita local councils.

Also, Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, has suspended the operation of cattle markets across the state. This was communicated in a statement signed yesterday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ahmed Matane, which stated that it was part of measures to address security challenges in the state.

The directive is expected to take effect from today. “Any vehicle carrying cattle into the state must show way-bill and evidence of the origin where the cattle were purchased and their destination,” the statement added.

It also noted that the state government had banned the sale of petroleum products in jerry cans or any other containers at filling stations. “All filling stations should not sell petrol of more than N10,000 to each vehicle at a time and should be wary of vehicles or motorcycles coming for repeat purchases,” the statement read.

MEANWHILE, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, raised concerns over the rising deployment of youths from the North to Yorubaland under the guise of riding motorcycles and illegal mining. The group also condemned the statement credited to Miyetti Allah that they would not obey anti-open grazing law in the South.

These were the parts of resolutions of Afenifere after its meeting at the house of its acting leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, in Ogbo-Ijebu, Odogbolu Local Government Area of Ogun State.

In a communiqué read by the National Secretary of the group, Chief Sola Ebiseni, Afenifere lamented the increasing spate of kidnapping in all the Yoruba-speaking states under the guise of commercial motorcycle business and mining.

The communiqué read in parts: “There is an increasing state of kidnapping in all Yoruba states, which are associated with herdsmen. This has led to the relocation of some of our people particularly in Yewa in Ogun State, and Ibarapa area of Oyo State. We note the illegal deployment of youth from Northern parts of the country into Yoruba land under the guise of okada riders and in some cases illegal miners.”

Afenifere also lauded governors for their resolution against open grazing, calling on them to intensify efforts in deployment of Amotekun operatives, hunters and vigilantes.

“We hear that the head of Miyetti Allah said they will not recognise the law passed by our states and that our governors will never be able to enforce those laws. We will enjoin the governors to ensure that the laws are enforced. If they have the capacity to tell us that the laws passed by our own parliaments in our own various states will not be enforced, we will say Yoruba people will support the governors to ensure the laws are enforced and we assure them that the Yoruba people will support the governors to enforce the laws,” the communiqué read.

The Southern Nigeria Frontier (SNF) has described as strange and unguided comments by Miyetti Allah Kauta Hore on anti-grazing law being promulgated across the Southern States of Nigeria as ‘Satanic.’

While it demanded an investigation into the alleged threat by the group on the life of Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, the SNF said if Miyetti Allah thinks lands in Southern Nigeria would be ceded for its occupation forcefully, “then, it should well prepare for the consequences of disobedience to legitimate laws in our states.”

SNF Spokesperson, Olufemi Lawson, in a statement on Tuesday, regretted that Miyetti Allah have developed penchant for lawlessness, to a level which suggested that its operatives were seriously under the influence of hard substances.

According to him, the threat that cattle breeders in the country would not obey the law, as the deadline approaches, across the states of the Southern Nigeria, was the height of reckless statement.

Lawson said: “This group of cattle rearers also went further to threaten the incumbent Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, of arrest, with the use of its militia wing, at the expiration of his tenure of office.”

… kidnapped victim rescued

A suspected kidnapper, Funmi Adenuoye has been shot dead by one of his gang members during a shootout with operatives of the Ondo State Security outfit codenamed Amotekun.

Adenuoye was killed by his colleague identified as Kunle while trying to escape from the men of the Amotekun who pursued them after they kidnapped a 58-year-old cement dealer, Alhaji Shakirudeen from his home at waterside area Ogun State.

The deceased and two of his gang members, Tayo Ibrahim and Kunle had on Wednesday kidnapped the cement dealer.

Sources said that the suspects drovr their victim to Okitipupa in Ondo State from Ogun State with the intention to hide there and negotiate for ransom.

The suspects were said to have been pursued by Amotekun following their reckless driving after crossing into Ondo State with their victim.

Ibrahim, 38, who was arrested after the gun duel confessed that they had negotiated with the victim to pay a ransom of N2m before the shoot out with the Amotekun.

According to him “I was in my house when my friend Funmi Adenuoye told me to wait somewhere for him. When we met he told me that we were going for a robbery operation. It was when I got into the vehicle that I realized that they had already kidnapped a man.

“It was when we were going that Funmi asked the man whether he has N10m and the man said he doesn’t have such amount.

“But he later told the man to tell his people to bring N2m for his release. Kunle was the one handling the gun used for the operation.”

On his part, the victim while thanking God for his life and the timely intervention of Amotekun said that his abductors negotiated for his ransom while on motion as he was said to be blindfolded and made to lie down in his vehicle, a Toyota Highlander which was used to kidnap him

“When they kidnapped me, they told me that they will collect N10m for my release but after pleading with them, they agreed to collect N2m.

“They told me to call my family to get the money ready and the money was raised.

” They said the money should be taken to a place between J4 and Ajibandele in Ondo State. But Amotekun had rescued me before they could collect the ransom.”

The Amotekun Commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye said that the security outfit intelligence network aided the operation.

“One Tayo Ibrahim, Funmi Adenuoye and one Kunle engaged one Alhaji Shakirudeen, 58, that resides in Owopin area of waterside in Ogun State.

“They met him by his door at 2000hrs on the 6th of October 2021 at gunpoint. They were able to kidnap him, bundled him into a highlander vehicle and drove recklessly out of Ogun State into Ondo State.

“Our credible intelligence network picked that some criminals are driving recklessly. At that point, we didn’t really know what was in the vehicle but their driving presupposes that they were problems. So we laid manhunt for them and in the Okitipupa area of Ondo State, we were able to apprehend the gang.

“They engaged our men in a shootout and we were able to eventually secure the release of the victim, Alhaji Shakirudeen.

“We also arrested Tayo Ibrahim who negotiated with the victim for a ransom of N10m while on the road. They thereafter gave him his phone to contact his family members who were directed to bring the negotiated amount to a particular point in the riverine area of Ondo State.

“The kidnappers who carried out the act were three in number. One died, another one was able to escape and we have one with us in our custody.

“The one that ran away was the one who was armed with a gun. It was when he was trying to escape that he began to shoot and in the process the gunshot me one of his gang.

“They injured one of our operatives but he now recuperating in the hospital and they lost one of their member in the shoot out.”

The Amotekun boss also revealed that two other suspects who used to provide basic necessities for kidnap victims and kidnappers in the forest were arrested in Owo, headquarters of Owo Local Government Area of the state.

Adeleye said that the suspects were arrested while buying some materials at Ikare-Owo junction with the motive of taking them into the forest for their other gang members.

He added that “after we finished the investigation, some of them will be released for further investigation to other sisters security organizations while those that we have completed investigation on will be prosecuted directly by the State Security outfit.

Defeated Senator Akinyelure asks delegates return cars, dollars

Senator Ayo Akinyelure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who failed to win re-nomination at his party’s primary, has taken back two of the vehicles he gave to delegates before the election.

Akinyelure lost the Ondo South ticket by 58-82 votes to a senior advocate of Nigeria, Ifedayo Adedipe.

Disappointed that he failed to win his party’s ticket, Akinyelure withdrew a car he gave to Chief Segun Adegoke, a delegate who voted at the election.

According to the Daily Trust, the Senator also gave Adegoke, a 24-hour ultimatum to return the dollars he reportedly got before the election.

Akinyelure’s spokesman, Charles Akinwon, explained the reason for the action, saying the delegates failed to deliver.

“For avoidance of doubt and to put the record straight, the public is to take note of the following facts as regards the case in question; Hon Akindiose, you promise to deliver Ondo East for Sen Ayo Akinyelure in the just concluded PDP primary election on a conditional promise to buy you a car for the work you did in 2019 and the Senator told you that this is not practicable in the present circumstances because there are 5 other chairmen and all of you have been receiving N25,000 monthly allowance unhindered since his assumption of office over two and half years ago and you later complained that your car was faulty, and demanded that you need a car urgently to do the job of Ondo East and West to deliver substantial delegates for him and the Car (Lexus 330) in question was released to you from his pool to work for him and be returned on completion of the assignment, and he promised to buy a car for you if you deliver on your promises to win the primary election.

“The agreement was that this acclaimed gifted car would be recovered from you to give you another Car to compensate your efforts, after you must have delivered on promises, which you eventually failed to do. There was no transfer of Ownership document because it was not a gift but was released to you to carry out an assignment of mobilization of delegates to enable him win election, but this condition was not fulfilled by you. You voted against him, and you showed your vote to the Senator’s Agent in the voting centre.

“That instead of fulfilling your promises, you voted against him and mobilize delegates against him, and he lost all the votes of Ondo East and West on the instructions of your political god fathers. Thereafter, you went ahead to go and forge “Change of Ownership” of the said car in your favor and sworn two different affidavits that the car was sold to you by Senator Ayo Akinyelure, while the second affidavit stated that it was a gift from Senator Ayo Akinyelure (two contradictions) and you went ahead to go and register his car in your own name without his authority. As a lawyer you should know that this is a case of conversion of another man’s property and a perjury for lying on oath.

“You also went ahead to collect $5,600 for 7 delegates at $800 each and N150,000 for hotel expenses collected from his house with your instruction by Wole Akinjo, CINCERO Akindiose and Oriola AKINWONMI on 23rd May 2022 at about 6am in the morning and you confirm delivery of cash to you on phone when the 3men got back to you for the 7 Delegates in your care to vote for him, when you know that you were not going to vote for him. You confirm that you never voted for him, this is a breach of verbal agreement with Sen Ayo Akinyelure, an action that will not entitle you to be given a car after the election out of some cars already bought by him to be distributed after the primary to some chairmen and others he promised along with you

“The five (5) Cars bought by Senator Ayo Akinyelure to be given as gifts to you and others are in his residence in Akure out of which he had already given two (2) out to his loyalists, despite losing at the party primaries, assuming you deliver on your promises you would have gotten your own car on return of his Lexus car as agreed.

Therefore your claim that he collected a gifted car from you for work done on 2019 is false and a cheap blackmail. The Senator is a man of integrity and he is known to be a “talk and do” Senator of Ondo Central.

“These are the reasons he requested you return the car with all the Money collected from the Senator for the seven (7) delegates and hotel bill obtained by false pretenses, or face a court action for perjury and conversion of his property without his lawful authority.

“You are therefore given 24 hours to return the money collected from him in your best interest. You only returned the said car on the strong advise of Police officers in charge of recovery on police intervention on 24th May 2022, but up till now you refuse to return the $5,600 and N150,000 you instructed him to transfer to account of Wole Akinjo for hotel expenses of 6 and yourself making 7 delegates that slept in the hotel in Ondo and delivered to you by Wole Akinjo as claimed by him.”

Apart from Akinyelure, another PDP senator Nicholas Tofowomo, also lost nomination to re-contest Ondo south in the coming election.

Kidnappers live like kings inside forest along Ore/ Ijebu Ode highway — Escaped female victim raises alarm

By Dayo Johnson, Akure

A mother of three and a timber merchant in Ondo town, Ondo state, Mrs Folakemi Fadoju has raised the alarm that kidnappers live like kings inside forest along Ore/ Ijebu Ode road highway.

The 41 year old mother said this while narrating her ordeal to Vanguard after she escaped from the kidnappers den.

Folakemi, who spent four days in their captivity, was abducted alongside her seven year old son in Ondo town,Ondo state by four gunmen in her sawmill at about 645 am.

She explained that the four gunmen invaded the sawmill located in Oka along Ondo-Ore road around 6:45am while she was at the sawmill to settle a business transaction

The traumatized mother said the hoodlums, who blindfolded her, bundled her and her sick son into a waiting vehicle, shooting into the air, before taking them to a forest along Ore- Ijebu Ode where she spent four days without food or water.

Narrating her ordeal, Folakemi said that ” “I left early for sawmills to attend to some business and pay my workers who are traveling on this fateful day, but no sooner that I entered the sawmill, these men dragged me into their vehicle, blindfolded me and drove off.

“They drove for some hours and we had to trekked to their hideouts where i met two other people tied to the trees. They demanded for my phone which they used to call my husband. They threatened to kill me if my husband tried to play smart by informing the police.

“The kidnappers contacted my husband, and negotiated for N15m ransom to secure my freedom and our little boy.

“They told me they were kidnappers and said they abducted me because of ransom. They said if I don’t have money they will take my life”

” They tied me and two other persons l met inside the forest and subjected us to all form of torture and threatened to kill me and my son if my husband failed to produced the ransom within 48 hours.

” They tortured me and others with no food or water to drink but they gave my boy water for the four days. They operated in the forest like king”

On how she escaped ” our escape from the hands of the kidnappers was made possible due to divine intervention, l can’t explain what happened in the forest while the abductors had to leave them alone.

” On the forth day, we started hearing gunshot in the forest, it was exchanged of gunfire and it was so heavy that the two men assigned to guard us had to leave to join others members of the gang to see what was happening.

“They warned us against leaving the camp but no sooner they left, one of us suggested we should try to escape and it worked. Even though i was weak, tired and sick but i managed to walk for over an hour before coming out at J4 area where we met a Samaritan who listened to our story and took us to the police in Ondo town”

She said the case had been reported earlier at the Yaba police station by her family.

“It was a nightmare and the trauma is not explainable as the incident keeps recurring. I experienced it and survived it by the special grace of God. I never wished my worst enemy to go through what I passed through because it was so traumatizing .

She however, appealed to the security operatives in the state, to move into action and raid all the forest along Ore/ Ijebu Ode road where the criminals use as their hide outs.

Folakemi said ” many people are still in that forest waiting to be rescued.”

The state police command spokesman Funmi Odunlami, said that total war has declared on “criminals who want to give the peaceful sunshine state a bad name.

Owo: Akeredolu reveals aim of attackers, says gunmen didn’t come to kill

By Adejayan Gbenga Gsong

The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on Thursday, visited the scene where some bandits carried out an attack, injuring two people.

Some hoodlums attacked the yard of the Craneburg Construction Company, at Folahanmi Junction, Owo.

Speaking at the scene, Akeredolu said the shooting was aimed at destroying some of the equipment of the construction company and not to maim or kill anyone.

He said, “I want to allay the fear of our people. Clearly, what happened here on Wednesday night was not an attempt to kidnap anybody because they went away with nobody. And we have on the premises over hundred people living there.

“Yes, there were sporadic gunshots at the wall but they never went inside to kill anybody. It is better for everybody to know. They didn’t go inside there to kill anybody. The only two people who had some gunshots were security men who they saw outside the premises.

“So, it is clear to us that their intention was to attack one or two equipment here, which they did. Their explosives affected the tyres and the windscreen of another vehicle.

“And we have close to 50 vehicles here. For us we are looking at it. We are not clear yet about their intention, but this is not one that should send unnecessary panic or fear into the minds of our people. This should not cause panic.

“For the contractors, Owo is a relatively safe place for them. So, they didn’t have armed people here. Maybe we will have to support them to have armed people here to protect all their equipments and vehicles.

“They have been here for over five years. They had the Ore bridge and other roads. So, they are doing so many things for us and they are doing well and we are ready to give them necessary protection.”

The governor also reassured the people of his administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, stressing that the Wednesday night shooting was not anything near the June five attack in the town.

Battleground 2023: Like Osun, crises threaten APC in 20 states

By Charles Kumolu, Dayo Johnson,Bashir Bello, Chioma Onuegbu, Shina Abubakar,James Ogunike, Ugochukwu Alaribe& Haruna Aliyu

• Things fall apart in Kaduna, Kano, Ogun, Kwara, Imo, A’ Ibom, Ekiti, Rivers, Kebbi, Yobe, Zamfara, others

If the claim by the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, that in-fighting in the Osun State chapter of the party led to its electoral defeat is anything to go by, APC risks suffering the same fate in 20 states.

The reason is not far-fetched. Many state branches are enmeshed in intra-party crises resulting from unresolved supremacy battles and fallouts of recent party primaries.

Investigations across the country show that notwithstanding the call by President Muhammadu Buhari on members to sheath their swords, the aggrieved are not taking their plight in good faith.

While some have dumped the party for other folds, especially the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, others remain but may work against the party in the next elections like in the Osun election where party faithful were alleged to have worked against APC.

Failure

Adamu had said internal wrangling between staunch PDP members in Osun led to the party’s failure in the governorship election.

In an interview with BBC Hausa Service, he explained that aggrieved party stalwarts said they would not vote if what they wanted was not done.

His words: “There’s a misunderstanding between party members, the APC juggernauts in Osun State APC. These juggernauts have been quarrelling, accusing each other.

“But we were defeated not because we are not good at politics. It was because of what happened between some party members close to the election.

“This has shown that we have a big task ahead. We must see what we can do and change our tactics.

“We must look at ourselves; see if what we are doing in this political journey is right.

“What are those things that are not right? What needs to be corrected so that we get what will lead to success in our journey?”

Sunday Vanguard had reported that PDP candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, scored over 400, 000 votes to defeat APC’s Adegboyega Oyetola who had 375,027 votes. Long before the governorship election, the party had been factionalised in Osun. Oyetola, the incumbent governor, is at daggers drawn with his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola, who is the Minister of Interior. The crisis divided the party in Osun into two camps.

Party congresses

In October last year, ahead of its convention, APC inaugurated a national reconciliation committee to reconcile aggrieved members.

Then-Caretaker Committee Chairman, Governor Mai Mala Buni, explained that the committee was set up to reconcile members who were aggrieved over the outcome of the party’s congresses.

At the end of its work in January this year, the body suffered a setback as the crises were far from over, especially in states like Zamfara, Osun, Kwara and Akwa Ibom.

Sunday Vanguard had reported that some state chapters like Bauchi claimed members of the panel didn’t visit the state.

Meanwhile, the states identified as still troubled by Sunday Vanguard include Lagos, Kano, Gombe, Kaduna, Bauchi, Zamfara, Kwara, Kebbi, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Rivers, Cross River, Imo, Benue, Nasarawa, Abia and Akwa Ibom.

LAGOS:

Unease currently pervades the Lagos chapter of the APC, the strong hold of its presidential candidate and National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, following protests by different groups over alleged discrepancies and manipulation perpetrated in the primaries that produced various party’s flag-bearers for the 2023 general polls.

Members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, GAC, and executive members of the party in Lagos had called for a reconciliation meeting as a result of ill-feelings created based on the outcome of the primaries which produced Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as governorship and deputy governorship candidates respectively and other candidates, with a view to closing cracks and reconcile aggrieved members.

The aggrieved parties have kicked against what they called giving tickets to “anointed candidates” over popular will of members by APC leaders.

A reconciliation meeting, however, ended in chaos as suspected political thugs, allegedly sponsored by aggrieved parties, particularly from Lagos Mainland, stormed the venue of the stakeholders’ meeting on Monday at the party’s Secretariat on Acme Road, Ogba.

The thugs were allegedly from two contending factions of the party from Lagos Mainland, with a retiring member of the House of Representatives (name withheld) said to be the leader of one of the groups.

Hamzat, subsequently, calmed frayed nerves in the ensuing melee when he arrived at the state party’s Secretariat. There was an earlier report that the deputy governor was attacked by the thugs to register their displeasure which had been debunked by Hamza’s aide.

The deputy governor, subsequently, after restoring normalcy, handed the meeting over to GAC member and leader of the party in Lagos Central, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, with the mandate to intervene in the crisis and resolve the lingering crisis pending further action.

Another prominent APC leader, Fouad Oki, also addressed the gathering on the need for aggrieved parties to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign in the party as reconciliation has commenced.

Sanwo-Olu, who was absent at the meeting, is expected to preside personally over the the rescheduled meeting at a later date.

Speaking on the crisis, a stakeholder who preferred anonymity, stated, “The Local Government in question is Lagos Mainland which has several knotty issues that need to be cleared and managed.

“The protest is a normal occurrence in situation like this, as party members, it was bound to be, but the deputy governor was able to handle the situation by calming the situation tentatively.”

ONDO:

The alleged imposition of “anointed” candidates during the last national and state assembly primary elections by the leadership of APC in Ondo State polarised the party.

This happened despite the report of a committee set up by the party’s leadership to interface with all stakeholders across the three senatorial districts.

The panel ruled out consensus and supported the conduct of primaries

Although Governor Rotimi Akeredolu denied imposing candidates, aspirants who lost out in the elections across the 18 council areas claimed that state and party machinery were deployed in support of the “chosen ones”.

One of the aggrieved aspirants told Sunday Vanguard that during a stakeholders meeting held with all the aspirants, the governor and the leadership of the party, led by the state Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, told many of the aspirants not to re-contest owing to complaints from their constituencies of non-performance.

However, Akeredolu reportedly told those who didn’t agree with the decision to test their popularity at the primaries. But they were said to have been shortchanged as the leaders in many of the council areas voted for consensus as against the conduct of primary elections agreed upon by the committee.

Delegates were shocked in many constituencies as designated venues were desolate on the day of the primary, only for results to be announced later.

State Publicity Secretary of the party, Alex Kalejaye, said: “To ensure victory for the party in 2023, the Ondo State chapter, shortly after the recent primaries, set up a formidable reconciliation committee.

“It is a 7-man Committee, under the chairmanship of a former deputy governor, Alhaji Lasisi Oluboyo.

“The team has the mandate to consider, and dispassionately too, the issues that cropped up before, and during the exercise, identify all the aspirants that are embittered by the process, and look into their grievances.”

Also, the state party Chairman pleaded with aggrieved aspirants, who have challenged the outcome of the primaries in court, to withdraw their suits for out-of-court settlement.

Irrespective of the peace efforts, aggrieved party faithful are adamant in pursuit of what they called justice.

EKITI:

In Ekiti, the Dayo Adeyeye – led pro-Tinubu South West Agenda for Asiwaju, SWAGA, had constituted itself as a parallel state executive council of the APC. And there are fears in many quarters that the division may result in electoral defeats for the party in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Publicity Secretary of the party in Ekiti, Segun Dipe, said all contending issues would be addressed.

He said: “Our presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, is leading the charge for reconciliation and appeasement of aggrieved party members.

“Grievances of aggrieved members in the last gubernatorial, national and state assembly primaries are being addressed.

“Machinery has been set in motion to ensure that aggrieved members are attended to.”

OSUN:

The division between Oyetola and Aregbesola, which played out in penultimate week’s poll, would remain an issue even during next year’s general elections.

Efforts to reconcile the two gladiators proved abortive, partly leading to the party’s defeat.Aregbesola and his faction, The Osun Progressive, TOP, were said to have mobilised for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in the APC presidential primary election, which Tinubu eventually won. The group was said to be indifferent to APC during last week’s election.

OGUN:

The crisis currently rocking the Ogun State chapter of APC began in 2018 due to the disagreement between groups loyal to Governor Dapo Abiodun and his predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun.

In the build-up to the 2019 gubernatorial election, Amosun loyalists left APC and migrated to Allied People’s Movement, APM, to actualise their dreams.

After the election, the group returned to APC, but refused to align with the leadership of Chief Yemi Sanusi.

Amosun’s loyalists did not participate in all the party’s congresses, from ward level to the state conducted by the Abiodun-backed group.

They, Amosun’s loyalists, held parallel congresses. Also, the group refused to participate in primary elections held to choose party candidates for different elective positions in the 2023 general elections.

As preparations for the elections gather momentum, the two factions have renewed their rivalry with Amosun’s camp plotting to stop the re-election of Abiodun.

The Amosun group tried all it could to prevent the Abiodun-led faction from deciding the candidates for various positions across the state. But Abiodun, whose group controls the party structure, has vowed that Amosun and his people will fail.

OYO:

There are pending cases in courts arising from the recently conducted party primaries and congresses. Aggrieved party members are challenging the outcomes of the elections.

The matter is a source of worry to the party leadership given the insistence of embittered members on getting what they termed justice.

Following the primaries that produced Teslim Folarin as APC flag bearer and other candidates, many aggrieved APC leaders alongside their followers have dumped the party for the PDP, Accord Party, AP, Social Democratic Party, SDP, and New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

They had accused Folarin of hijacking the party structure.

Having realised the implication of going into the election divided just like in Osun, the party inaugurated a 24-man peace and reconciliation committee led by Senator Olufemi Lanlehin to resolve all post-primary election disputes and ensure its success in next year’s elections.

Since the inauguration of the committee, Sunday Vanguard reliably gathered that its members have been working to bring all the aggrieved party chieftains back to the fold.

ABIA:

Peace seems to have eluded Abia State APC. The tussle for who is the authentic governorship flag bearer of APC in the state is tearing the party apart.

Leaders of the two factions had met at Ntalakwu in Ikwuano council area where they resolved their differences and confirmed Chief Ikechi Emenike as the party’s sole governorship candidate for the 2023 election and Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu as the state Chairman of the party.

The APC in the state had been divided into two factions led by Senator Chris Adighije and Emenike.

However, the peace meeting was boycotted by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, and the then Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Uche Ogah, who belonged to the Adighije faction. A group led by the Secretary of the former Adighije-led group, Perfect Okorie, said his group was not a party to the peace meeting.

Emenike emerged during the party’s governorship primary conducted by the panel set up by the national leadership of the party. Chairman of the APC governorship primary election committee for Abia State, Chief Tony Obiefuna, who declared the result of the primary election in Umuahia, disclosed that Emenike polled 672 votes to defeat Chief Emeka Atuma, Daniel Eke, Chief Obinna Oriaku, and Ogah.

A few hours after the exercise, Ogah also emerged in a parallel governorship primary conducted by a faction of the party.

Sunday Vanguard gathered that Ogah and another governorship aspirant, Chief Daniel Eke, had resorted to litigation to boost their chances of displacing Emenike as the authentic flag bearer of the party.

Eke and Ogah had filed separate suits at the Federal High Court seeking to be declared as the governorship candidate of the party. Eke’s suit came after the peace meeting at Ntalakwu.

Eke has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia to stop both Emenike and Ogah from parading themselves as governorship candidates of the party. Eke, in a suit marked FHC/UM/ 18/96/2022 wants the court to declare the outcomes of the two parallel primaries as unlawful and invalid, stressing that it did not follow due process.

Ogah is kicking against the recognition of Emenike as governorship candidate by the national leadership of the party, insisting that he remains the authentic flag bearer having emerged from direct primaries.

Recently, the Court of Appeal, Owerri, dismissed a motion filed by Ogah, seeking leave to challenge the judgment of the Abia State High Court which affirmed Emenike’s candidacy.

Two chieftains of the party, Ugochukwu Okoroafor Okoro and Egwu Clifford Chukwudi, have also filed a suit at the Federal High Court, Umuahia, against Emenike and three others as defendants, alleging that their names were removed as delegates for the party primaries.

It is not known whether elders of the party in the state such as Kalu, Nkiru Onyejeocha,Senator Chris Adighije, Friday Nwosu and Stanley Ohajuruka, among others, have made any effort to resolve the crisis.

KANO:

Kano State chapter of APC is faced with a lot of hurdles ranging from backlogs of suits to gale of defections among others.

There are fears that if the issues are not properly addressed, they may affect the chances of the party in the general elections.

Reliable information available to Sunday Vanguard revealed that a total of eight court cases were filed against the party at the various law courts.

The Secretary of APC in the state, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, at a meeting recently, revealed that the party is currently facing eight court cases filed by some aggrieved members.

Sarina expressed concern that the court cases may affect its chances of winning elections.

His words: “The issue of lawsuits is a serious concern because we know how it creates problems for a party. This is not in Kano alone, court cases against APC are everywhere across the country. We saw how APC members dragged the party to court in many places in this country.

“In Kano, we have had at least eight court cases so far. We do not know what is going to happen tomorrow, but we are facing eight court cases in this state filed by aggrieved party members.

“This has a repercussion because you could win an election but a court judgement may be against the victory. We, therefore, call on the APC national body to see how it would resolve this issue of court cases.”

As a result of differences in the party, many chieftains have defected.

Those who dumped APC in Kano include former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau and his followers, ex-Speaker, Alhassan Rurum, former Chief of Staff to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, Ali Makoda, former SSA to President Muhammadu Buhari, Kawu Sumaila, and former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa.

KADUNA:

The Kaduna State chapter of the APC is also experiencing crises. After the governorship primary in the state, an in-law to President Muhammadu Buhari, Alhaji Sani Sha’aban, had protested against the congress which produced 2,619 delegates.

A few days ago, no fewer than 15 of its chieftains dumped the party over what they described as lack of internal democracy.

The chieftains who left the party include Mallam Audu Bode, Alhaji Shuabu Ahmed, Habila Latu, Boniface Ubandoma, Mr. Yakubu Simon, Jashua Peter, Camio Bitrus, Patrick Paul (Pato), Mr. Samuel Wyah, Zaka Makoshi, Jonathan Fedelix, Barnabas Samuel (Barry), Shua’ibu Yusuf, Alexander Danladi Lulu and Samuel Ibrahim.

APC Legal Adviser in Jema’a Local Government Area, Ibrahim Samuel, in a letter addressed to his Ward Chairman, said: “My decision to dump APC was based on the internal crises in the party, lack of internal democracy and total disrespect”.

Two others, Barnabas Samuel and Ibrahim Samuel Oganto, in a statement also said the names that emanated during the party congress were different from the ones agreed to be used for primaries.

Meanwhile, a reconciliation committee has been set up to address the grievances of members in the state.

They are to resolve all post-primary election crises in Kaduna.

North-West Zonal Publicity Secretary of APC, Malam Musa Mailafiya Mada, disclosed this.

His words: “The committee will be saddled with the responsibility of reaching out to co-contestants of all the elective positions who did not win their primaries for the forthcoming 2023 general elections and other aggrieved party members in the state.

“The Local Government Reconciliatory Committees will also be constituted afterwards.

Respected party members were nominated by the participants for the task and the governor assured the meeting of his readiness to give the necessary support for the success of the committee’s assignment before the campaign starts.”

KEBBI:

The internal wrangling in Kebbi APC predated the party primaries. The party was already factionalised before the exercise. But issues came to a head after the primaries, leading to the defections of its key leaders including former Governor Adamu Aliero.

The ex-governor and his supporters defected to the PDP as a protest against what he claimed was done to him.

There has been a gale of defections in Kebbi APC. A few days ago, thousands of its members dumped APC in Gulma town in Argungu Local Government Area.

The defectors were led by Alhaji Mansur Adamu Gulma Yargyra, a former House of Representatives aspirant. Mansur, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, said he left the APC due to injustice allegedly done to many members.

Receiving the defectors in Gulma, a former Senate Leader, Senator Yahya Abdullahi, expressed joy over their defection, saying their coming into the PDP meant they are comfortable with the leadership he exhibited while in APC.

AKWA IBOM:

Akwa Ibom State chapter of APC has been in the news over the outcome of the recently concluded primaries.

This situation has deepened the ill-feelings between key stakeholders of the party who participated in the exercise and their teeming supporters.

Immediately after the party primaries, one of the aspirants and immediate past Senior Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Senator Ita Enang, approached the court to seek redress over the outcome which produced Mr. Akan Udofia as APC governorship candidate.

Similarly, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police and senatorial candidate for Akwa Ibom APC North-West Senatorial District seat, Udom Ekpoudom, is challenging the rerun senatorial primary in which Sen Godswill Akpabio, immediate past Niger Delta Affairs Minister, is laying claims to its outcome.

Akpabio, after stepping down for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during the presidential primary in Abuja, had returned to Akwa Ibom to participate in the said rerun.

There are concerns in some quarters that the candidacy tussle and exit of key stakeholders from the party may affect APC’s outing in the forthcoming elections.

A former National Secretary of the party, Senator Akpan Akpanudoedehe, had earlier dumped APC on account of a high-wire intra-party squabble.

RIVERS:

In Rivers, the differences among party leaders are still unresolved. The matter, which is solely a battle over who controls party structure, seems to have defied all efforts at resolving. Up until now, camps loyal to the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and Senator Magnus Abe, are against each other in the battle for APC’s soul.

The crisis took a different dimension last week when notable members of the party took turns to tender their letters of resignation.

Apart from Prince Tonye Princewill, an ally of Amaechi, who attributed his resignation to the APC Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, others did not state clearly the reason for their resignations.

Others who dumped APC in Rivers include a former Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, a former member of the House of Representatives, Chidi Wihioka; ex-member of the House Representatives, Chigbo Eligwe; Golden Chioma, a former Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party and one-time member of the Rivers State House of Assembly; Dr. Dawari George, a former member of the House of Representatives, and Mr. Marvin Yobana, a prominent youth leader in the Ogoni axis of the state. Others are Owen Obediah, a lawyer and former CTC Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area; King Tony Gboms, a chieftain of the APC in Obio Akpor Local Government Area; Chief Friday Nkee-ee Numbari, a former member of the state House of Assembly, and Mr. Celestine Akpobari, a prominent right activist.

At the last count, no fewer than 50 APC members have left the party.

NASARAWA:

In Nasarawa, the APC has been dragged to court over post-primary elections issues.

A House of Representatives aspirant, Mohammed Al-Basir, has taken the party to Federal High Court over alleged irregularities in the conduct of the primaries in the state.

Other aspirants who weren’t satisfied with the outcome of their elections are also kicking.

Nonetheless, Governor Abdullahi Sule isn’t relenting in ensuring the party is united ahead of 2023 elections.

BENUE:

In Benue, the emergence of Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia as APC governorship candidate seems to have stoked a crisis among party stakeholders.

Leaders like Senator Barnabas Gemade, who contested the election, had kicked against Alia’s candidacy.

He had maintained that the party failed to hold the gubernatorial primary election as stipulated by the guidelines of APC.

The choice of Sam Ode as a running mate to Alia is also a source of contention in Benue South. Stakeholders from the zone rejected him, insisting they have not had any conversation with him and wondered why he was declared the deputy governorship candidate.

Others:

Other states where intra-party crisis seems to also constitute a threat to APC as 2023 approaches include Ebonyi, Kwara, Imo, Cross River, Bauchi, Zamfara and Gombe. The party faces tough battles in these states as the 2023 elections approach. Checks revealed that except aggrieved members are pacified, the party’s performances may be close to the Osun scenario.

Again, Ondo Amotekun intercepts 168 suspected invaders with 40 motorcycles

By Abdul Babajide

Another 168 suspected invaders with dangerous charms, who hid themselves and 40 motorcycles beneath cows hauled in two trucks, have been intercepted by men of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed “Amotekun.”

DAILY POST reports that this occurred four days after the corps intercepted 151 alleged charm-wielding invaders near Sango along Akure/Ado road.

The suspects were paraded on Monday evening at the headquarters of the corps by the Commander of Amotekun Corps in the State, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye.

Adeleye said that they were stopped near Itaogbolu-Iju in the State’s Akure North Local Government Area after an Amotekun squad became suspicious of their activity.

The Amotekun Commander added that despite their claims that they were picked up in groups along the road and had no destination, investigation had shown that they were traveling from the States of Jigawa and Kano.

“Cows are on the upper floor, motorcycles are wrapped and disassembled in the middle, and 168 people are resting down on the lower floors, so if you’re not observant, you won’t see them.

“Upon interrogation, many of them do not have an address of where they are going, nobody invited them and we are becoming curious of these invasions.

“I called it invasion because you see over 100 able-bodied men concealing themselves under animals, it shows they are up to negative motives.

“As a Nigerian, regardless of the geopolitical zone, you have the right to lawfully go to any part of the country, but it is the unlawful part we are contesting. When you now move in a suspicious way, that would amount to criminality, that is where it puts you to question,” he said.

Mimiko to Wike: Your boldness sustained agitation for true federalism

 From Tony John, Port Harcourt

Former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko,  has noted that through bold legal challenges, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has  deepened the national consciousness concerning the defective federal system and advocated true federalism.

He made the statement when he performed the flag-off of construction work for the dualisation of Azikiwe-Iloabuchi Road in Mile 2 Diobu, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

He said Governor Wike combined such national advocacy with effective political leadership with which he doubtlessly changed the physical landscape of Rivers State.

“Beyond the self evident physical transformation, you (Wike) have stood as a bulwark against those sworn to emasculating the main opposition party, all in their bid to force a one party state down the throats of Nigerians.

“You were at one point virtually a one man countervailing force, defending and protecting our dear  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). You have also, through bold legal challenges, deepened the national consciousness on the defects in the running of our defective federal system.”

The former Ondo State governor said he was sure Governor Wike would remain committed to the struggle to entrench a true federal system that would engender real development across all ethnic nationalities, across all religious persuasions in Nigeria.

He pointed to the urgent need by all well-meaning Nigerians for national unity, which is the required impetus to effectively confront the intractable  security and economic challenges.

Governor Wike noted that elders of the state like  Azubuike Nmerukini and Austin Opara, mounted pressure on him to intervene on the road being flagged-off.

He said it would the last of such projects to execute within the Port Harcourt metropolis because in keeping with his promises of restoring the Garden City status, every road has been reconstructed.

“As a man, who respect leaders, I have to honour them by making sure this road is awarded and by making sure this road will be completed within six months.”

“This is the last project here in Port Port Harcourt, I think, I’m going to embark upon before I leave office. All the promises I have made in Port Harcourt, I have fulfilled them. Let somebody come and tell me which one I have not fulfilled. Old Government Residential Area, I have finished, New Government Residential Area, I have finished, Ogbum-nu-abali, I have finished, Diobu here, I have finished?”

Again INEC omits Labour Party’s logo on ballot papers sent to Ondo State

By Tayo Elegbede

Again fresh reports have emerged that the logo of the Labour Party is missing on the ballot papers sent to Ondo State by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Naija News reports that the development is the second to be reported in barely 24 hours to the Saturday polls.

This platform earlier reported that the Lagos State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) had slammed INEC for allegedly omitting the party’s logo on ballot papers for the Senatorial and House of Representatives elections billed for Saturday.

The state LP Chairperson, Dayo Ekong, made this known on Thursday during a news conference in Ikeja, calling on INEC to reschedule the election until the party’s candidates were included on the ballots.

Naija News reports that INEC, in Lagos State, on Wednesday took delivery of sensitive materials for the Presidential and National Assembly Elections scheduled for Saturday.

However, Dayo described the error as malicious, stating it is unacceptable because it was a wicked way of disenfranchising Lagos electorates.

This was noticed barely 24 hours to the presidential election scheduled to hold Saturday.

She noted that the error was not a mistake but rather a deliberate, malicious, and intentional act by the electoral umpire.

She said: “This malicious error was found out this morning in Lagos, by me and my team of executive members during the routine inspection of election materials.

“It was at inspection that it was discovered that the Labour Party was not listed for the election for Senate in and House of Representatives in Lagos State. This is unacceptable and a wicked way of disenfranchising Lagos electorates.

“It is unimaginable that for the elections slated for Saturday, Feb. 25, Lagos electorate will only vote for the Labour Party Presidential Candidate as INEC made no provision for the election of Party’s Senate and House of Representatives Candidates.

“We cannot accept this as we do not believe that INEC made a mistake but rather, a deliberate, malicious and intentional act by INEC at disenfranchising our supporters from exercising their civic rights which is unacceptable.”

Alleged Forgery: Schoolmate Defends Ondo Ministerial Nominee

Convener/National Coordinator of a socio-political organisation, Social Rehabilitation Gruppe (SRG), Dr. Marindoti Oludare, has come in strong defence of  the Ondo State ministerial nominee, Mr. Olubunmi  Tunde -Ojo, over allegation of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.

Oludare, a United States (US)-based medical doctor and old schoolmate of the ministerial nominee, said while he personally opposed the concept of the NYSC, he has evidence to prove that Ojo  duly enlisted in the youth service scheme and was issued a valid certificate.

The SRG boss, in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, enjoined the lawmakers to dismiss the petitioners as “meddlesome interlopers and insipid Rabble rousers.”

He  condemned  the petitioners tagged ‘Concerned Ondo Patriots’, stating, “I have watched with great concern/interest, the attempt by some group-’The concerned Ondo Parrots’, to derail the nomination of Bunmi Tunji-Ojo as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This group tried to raise a dud issue over his NYSC certificate which he duly has.

Oludare added, “While I am an avowed opponent of the NYSC, and I have sent a letter of an intention to sue to the federal government, first, I have to point out the intellectual deficiencies in the argument of these meddlesome interlopers and insipid Rabble rousers.

“The NYSC Act never places an age limit on when anyone can be deployed to serve. Olubunmi Tunji- Ojo graduated from a university outside Nigeria; hence, an NYSC call-up letter was not automatically served upon him.”

The medic cum socio-political activist stressed that Section 13 of the NYSC Act prescribes a punishment of imprisonment only for those “who fail to report for service in the Corps the manner directed by the Directorate“.

According to him, “BTO presented himself for NYSC, having not been called upon and his certificate was duly given, not forged.”

In the letter to the Senate,  Oludare said: “While these agents tried to assassinate his character, I feel compelled to speak about his character as 16-year old boy when he was the senior prefect in Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Staff Secondary School.”

“Tunji-Ojo on several occasions protected the junior students from being bullied and abused and I (a JSS1 student of the same school) was a repeated beneficiary of his protection.

“This act of little Tunji-Ojo  speaks of the manner of man he is; his kind heartedness, integrity and sense of responsibility to defend the vulnerable population around him, even as a teenager when his caprices would have been forgiven, speak volume.

“When Tunji-Ojo  gets confirmed as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, these and many more are some of the qualities that Nigerians will benefit from this man of noble mien.

“I have neither seen nor spoken to him since he graduated secondary 24 years ago; however, the care and concern he volunteered to my vulnerable nine-year-old self left an indelible mark on me, which is why I feel the need to defend him against this tasteless campaign of calumny,” Oludare stated.

‘Your intervention in Ondo unconstitutional’ – Ajulo cautions Tinubu

The post ‘Your intervention in Ondo unconstitutional’ – Ajulo cautions Tinubu appeared first on New Nigerian Politics.

By Abdul Babajide

A lawyer, Kayode Ajulo, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the political logjam that has been rocking Ondo State.

Ajulo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), while speaking on Silverbird Television program, Inside Politics, stressed that constitutional provisions relating to the situation in Ondo State ought to have been activated.

According to the legal practitioner, the constitutional provisions relating to the matter must be adhered to in order to fully restore governance in the state.

Recall that the state had for some weeks been in the news over the continued absence of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the plot to impeach the deputy governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Following the impasse, Tinubu invited the stakeholders to the Presidential Villa, where resolutions were reached in order to restore peace among the warring factions.

While frowning at one of the resolutions that allegedly led to the setting up of a tripartite committee to administer the affairs of the state and enforce the resolutions reached, Ajulo described the process as unconstitutional.

According to him, if it is proved that Akeredolu has been incapacitated, Aiyedatiwa should be sworn in as the acting governor without hesitation.

He also maintained that if nothing is done to arrest the situation, the 2024 fiscal year for the state might be affected, as he emphasised that there is no move by the state to present next year’s appropriation bill to the House of Assembly.

“I urge you all to take a few moments to consider the government and the well-being of the people in Ondo State. Given the current political situation, there is a significant concern that there will be no one available to present the state’s budget.

“The consequence of this could be widespread hunger and poverty, which will have a profound impact on the state’s population.”

A dramatic scene unfolded yesterday at the Ibadan private residence of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.

The presence of journalists that converged to cover the condolence visit of the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde to the deceased residence sparked off resistance.

The presence of journalists generated a negative reaction from one of the daughters of the deceased, named Ololade Akeredolu, who ordered all the journalists to leave the residence, on the ground that it was a private residence and not a Government House.

The duo arrived the Jericho residence of the late governor at about 5:30 pm.

Upon arrival, the two governors went straight into the private residence where the wife, Betty and some immediate family members were mourning.

However, swift intervention of some colleagues calmed the frayed nerves as the reporters who had laid siege to the entrance gates of the residence to monitor situation felt angry at the negative reaction.

Apparently sensing what had happened, the two governors after the visit walked out to the street where the journalists were waiting to interview the visitors.

Speaking, the Kwara State governor lauded the deceased governor for his commitment and impact on humanity.

Abdulrahman who described Akeredolu’s death as a great loss to the nation, recounted that the late Aketi rose to the peak of his career and politics and impacted greatly on humanity in developmental politics.

He said: “This is a solemn affairs, we are here today with the governor of Oyo state and myself on behalf of all the members of the Nigeria Governors Forum to pay a condolence visit to the family of the late Arakunrin Akeredolu. It is a sad affair.”

“We met the wife. We can just continue to pray that his soul will continue to rest in peace and may God give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

“It is indeed a great loss for the nation. This is a man that rose to the height of his chosen career, the bar. He rose to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He rose to the height of politics, he was the governor of a state.”

“He impacted greatly on humanity in developmental politics. All we can say for now is that may his soul rest in peace.”

“And we can also add that of the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dr Ghali Naabba, may Allah forgive him his sins and give him aljannah firdus.”

Also in his brief remarks, Governor Makinde said he has lost a friend, a brother and someone they had been in the trenches together.

Describing Akeredolu as a courageous individual who doesn’t mince words but someone who speaks truth to power, Governor Makinde, said the death was a big loss for him personally and for the southwest as a whole.

“Well, I can say that I have lost a personal friend, a brother, somebody that we have been in the trenches together. When we were going to set up Amotekun, he was pivotal to it.”

“And when we took the decision for Southern presidency, himself and the former governor of Anambra, they chaired the meeting at the Delta Government House.”

“So, this is somebody that is a courageous individuals, he doesn’t mince words. He says it as it is, he would speak truth to power. It is a big loss for me personally and for the southwest.”

“We will still continue to internalise it but we give God the glory that he lived a fulfilled life. At the end of the day, it is really not how long but how well and he lived well. He impacted humanity and the Southwest of Nigeria.”

The Forum said it has communicated the same to the family of the late governor, adding that a joint committee will be set up to achieve the cause.

The governors spoke through the governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun on Friday, December 29, when he led three other governors of the southwestern state on a condolence visit to the family of the late governor at their Jericho, Ibadan residence.

Other governors in the company of the Ogun governor include Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Oyo state deputy governor, Bayo Lawal who represented Governor Seyi Makinde.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was said to have missed the trip with the other governors due to flight delay.

Makinde is currently out of the country on holiday.

The Nation reports that the late governor Akeredolu, a second-term governor of Ondo state, who died on Wednesday, December 27, is the chairman of both the Southwestern Governors Forum and the Southern Governors Forum.

The governors arrived at the Akeredolu’s residence at about 1:15 pm in a convoy of over 20 cars.

Journalists were barred from entering the room where the governors were received. A big write-up banning the use of videos, cameras and or recording was pasted on the large expanse door leading into the large room.

A stern-looking man was also on hand to ensure compliance with the directive as he barked out directives and orders stopping journalists from entering the room and covering the visit.

However, unlike other times, journalists were allowed to sit inside the compound where a canopy and drinks had been provided for interested visitors.

While the governors were there, a former Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore arrived at the residence wearing a sombre look with his trademark cap.

Addressing journalists in the company of the three other governors shortly after the visit to the family, Governor Abiodun said the late Governor Akeredolu will be sorely missed by all of his governor-colleagues, adding that the void he left behind will be very difficult to fill by everyone.

He said all the governors are still in a state of shock and disbelief at the demise of Akeredolu whom he described as a senior colleague and brother.

Governor Abiodun said: “We are all here, governors of the southwestern states of Osun, Ekiti, Oyo and Lagos will soon be here, he had some flight issues.

“We are here to commiserate with the Akeredolu family and also the Ondo state government on the passing of our senior colleague and brother, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who the Lord has called to his side.

“Without a doubt, we are all still in a state of shock and disbelief. When we heard the news we were shocked and in dismay but we cannot question God. In all things, we are to thank God.

“We thank God that Governor Akeredolu lived a life of impact on every side. He did well, not just in Ondo state but in the Southwest, the whole South, and the entire country.

“He was a senior advocate of law and a highly intelligent governor. He played a prominent role in ensuring that the Presidency returned to the South and he stood firm his ground. He worked so hard. He is reliable and dependable and we all feel very hurt at his death.

“We as the governors of the Southwest have agreed that we will give him a befitting burial and we have people who will work with the family and government of Ondo state for a befitting funeral rites.

“Governor Akeredolu was the Chairman of the Southwestern Governor’s Forum, he was the Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum, a position that he held, he led very courageously, very fearlessly. He was a learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria, a successful second term governor of Ondo state.”

He said further: “All of us are here on behalf of our families, the entire people of our various states of the Southwest, to commiserate with the family and people and government of Ondo state.

“Our prayer is that the Almighty God will forgive all his sins and grant the repose of his soul. We also pray that he grants the wife, his children, his family members, the people and the government of Ondo state the heart to bear this very sad and shocking and painful exit.

“This is a man who was an advocate for the Southern presidency. We recall vividly the reinvigorated Southern Governors Forum meeting in Delta about two and half years ago and he championed that course that the Presidency must come to the South and he stayed with it, among several courses that he championed and fought successfully

Governor Akeredolu will be sorely missed by all of us. The void he left behind will be very difficult to fill by everyone.

“Collectively, we will be partly, majorly responsible for the funeral rites in according to him a farewell that he deserves. We have expressed that to the family, we will be setting up a joint committee of the Southwestern states to work with the family and collaborate with the government of Ondo state to ensure that we give him a deserving farewell.”

Earlier before the visit to the Akeredolus’, the Southwest governors had gathered at the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan separately.

On arrival, the governors were ushered into the private chamber of the governor for a closed-door meeting.

They were received by Makinde’s deputy, Bayo Lawal before going in a convoy on a condolence visit to the Akeredolus’.

Meanwhile, it was observed on Friday that State flags flew at half-mast at the Oyo state Secretariat in line with the directive of Governor Makinde.

The Nation reports that Governor Makinde had on Thursday declared a three-day mourning in the state in honour of the late former Ondo governor.
